Diversity is important, we all know that. So why is there still so little of it?

I attended Ballet Black earlier this month and it was an amazing show, such class and quality!
Ballet Black is a professional ballet company for Black and Asian dancers that aims to diversify ballet both in the audience and on the stage. They also teach dance classes too, so they're ushering in a new generation of dancers and I'm very glad the company exists, though it shouldn't have to.

I also attended a Young People in Arts talk on diversity on the arts and I wanted to share my favourite quotes from the panel:

"Every person of colour would have been told by their parents that they have to be better than their white counterparts in order to succeed."

"The things you learn by learning an instrument equips you for life."

"The glass ceiling is a figment of your imagination. If you don't acknowledge it, then it doesn't have to be your reality."

"If 44% of the workforce are from a 'minority' (I hate that word) background, then where are they? Clearly not in senior positions!"

"Why are we always trying to get a slice of the cake? Why can' we bake our own?"

We live in a diverse society and the creative industries should be most representative of that. Representation is so important. People naturally feel more comfortable when they see someone who looks like them.
Race, gender and disability are still so under-represented within the workforce, but there's a lot of talk going on so things are starting to change. I think. I hope.

  1. 100% agree that diversity is so important. It's kind of a vicious cycle, where if a young POC doesn't see themselves represented in an area they might think there's no place for them, which then continues with each generation.

    That first quote is also definitely so true, as in what my parents have said to me and also in the reality of the situation, unfortunately.

    1. Yes, representation is key to breaking that cycle! Young people need to see others like them succeeding in the workplace in order to see it within themselves.
      My parents definitely told me that and continue to do so, it's a sad reality in 2016...

  2. I totally agree with you, representation is 100% key. When I'm somewhere and I see people who look like me, as well as people who don't, it gives me an extra boost work harder. Diversity makes people of all colors more compelled to achieve their goals, and it has to start at the bottom, you have to give everyone an equal opportunity.

    1. Yes! A person's colour has no affect on their ability to do a job well or anything. Seeing other people like you succeed in your desired field does wonders for self belief and confidence, it has to improve.

    1. Thanks! As I'm starting to build my work experience, I've become more aware of the lack of representation and I'm passionate about its development.

  4. Diversity is extremely important. As I've gotten older, I recognized just how deleterious an effect the lack of it had on me, especially in art, which is the most accessible form of representation. Growing up, I noticed that it was mostly Caucasian stars in the media, all of whom were considered attractive within their diversity of facial features. Yet, for a Black or Asian person to be considered so, they had to fit into a certain mold of looks. It still is that way so I think programs like Ballet Black are imperative to changing that.
